OUR STORY

The Beginnings: The Hacienda Inn

Long before it became The Good House, this property was known as the Hacienda Hot Springs Inn. Built in 1957 on Miracle Hill in Desert Hot Springs, it quickly became a peaceful retreat where travelers came to soak in the area's naturally heated mineral waters. Surrounded by towering palms and quiet desert landscapes, the property offered something that has become increasingly rare: a place to truly slow down.

A new chapter began in 2003 when rare book dealer, publisher and preservationist William "Bill" Dailey purchased the aging motel and lovingly transformed it into an intimate boutique hotel. His vision reached far beyond beautiful rooms. Bill filled the property with antiques, books, artwork and music while creating a welcoming atmosphere where artists, writers and travelers naturally gathered. He also became a passionate steward of Desert Hot Springs history, collecting vintage photographs, postcards and stories that helped preserve the city's rich past.

Much of what guests love today can be traced back to the Hacienda years. From the peaceful gardens and winding pathways to the sense of community and unhurried pace, the foundation for The Good House was built during this time. While the property has evolved over the years, its spirit of restoration, creativity and genuine hospitality has remained unchanged.

Welcome to The Good House

In 2019, New Zealand singer-songwriter Gin Wigmore fell in love with the property and introduced it to the world as The Good House. She embraced its historic character while adding an eclectic California style filled with vintage furnishings, playful details and a relaxed, welcoming spirit. The name changed but the feeling never did.

Today, The Good House is proudly cared for by Brian Edson and David Shaker who continue to build upon its remarkable legacy. Their vision has expanded wellness through The Spa, elevated the culinary experience under Chef Van's leadership and strengthened the hotel's commitment to sustainability through its Green Key 4-Key Certification and partnerships with Kind Traveler and Temalpakh Farm.

Nearly seventy years after guests first arrived to soak in these remarkable mineral waters, The Good House remains what it has always been: a peaceful place to reconnect, recharge and feel at home. Every guest who walks through our gates becomes part of a story that is still being written.
